Frequently Asked Questions

Foam Dressings

Collection: Foam Dressings

If you're dealing with a wound that's weeping, a pressure injury that needs cushioning, or skin that's just been through surgery, you're probably here because someone told you to get a foam dressing and now you're staring at a wall of options wondering what the difference is. Fair enough. Let's sort that out.

Foam dressings are one of the most versatile wound care products going. They're soft, absorbent, and designed to create the kind of moist environment that helps wounds heal faster without sticking to fragile tissue.

What Are Foam Dressings Used For?

They're commonly used for:

  • Pressure injuries and sores (stages 2 and 3, whether on the heel, sacrum, or anywhere else pressure builds up)
  • Leg ulcers, including venous leg ulcers and arterial ulcers that need gentle, consistent coverage
  • Diabetic foot ulcers, where managing moisture and protecting delicate tissue really matters
  • Post-surgical wounds that are producing moderate to heavy fluid (exudate) in the days after an operation
  • Skin tears and abrasions in older or fragile skin that needs a non-traumatic, easy-change dressing
  • Cavity wounds, where silicone foam fillers or rope dressings can be packed in to support healing from the bottom up
  • Burns and donor sites where protection and moisture balance are critical

Some foam dressings have a silicone contact layer, which means they lift off cleanly at dressing change without pulling on new tissue. Others have adhesive borders so you don't need separate tape. Some are designed specifically for cavities or awkward body sites like heels and sacral areas. We'll help you find what actually fits your situation.

Not Sure Which Foam Dressing You Need?

A few quick questions to narrow it down: How much fluid is the wound producing? Is the wound flat or does it have depth? Are you changing dressings yourself at home, or does a nurse come in? Your answers will point you straight to the right product. If you'd rather just ask someone, give us a call and we'll point you in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are foam dressings used for pressure injuries?

Foam dressings cushion bony prominences (like the heel or tailbone) while absorbing wound fluid and keeping the skin around the wound dry. For pressure injuries, that combination of protection and moisture management is exactly what the tissue needs to heal without breaking down further.

Can foam dressings be used on infected wounds?

Some foam dressings are designed for use on wounds with signs of infection or high bacterial load, particularly those combined with silver or other antimicrobial agents. A standard foam dressing alone isn't the right call for a clinically infected wound. If there's redness spreading beyond the wound, an unusual smell, or the wound isn't improving, that's a conversation for your GP or wound care nurse.

How often do foam dressings need to be changed?

It depends on how much fluid the wound is producing. Most foam dressings can stay in place for two to seven days if they're not saturated or showing signs of leakage. Changing them too often can disrupt healing, so the goal is always the longest comfortable wear time that keeps the wound environment right.
